‘Sculpture of Anguish’ Amsterdam Light 2017

THE CONCEPT

LIGHT SCULPTURE TO EXPRESS CONTEMPORARY HUMAN ANGUISH

The starting point of the idea was how to reflect contemporary human anguish through the light sculpture in existential way. Here, the present crises such as racism, sexual and religious discrimination, the gap between the rich and the poor, threat of war & terrors, human rights abuse, climate change and natural disasters are the sources of the anguish. At the same time, how to deliver the various feelings universally as well as differently to visitors was the following issue. As a solution, several abstract sculptures will have important roles in the existential expressions.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE

STRATEGIC CONSIDERATION WITH CRUISES’ AND VISITORS’ EXPERIENCES

To find the right location, several strategies were considered. Firstly, the location should make cruises and visitors stay longer naturally than other locations. Secondly, the location should be able to make dramatic views with the various directional movements. Thirdly, the location must be in the middle of the cruises’ journey, so that visitors have enough time to reflect their thoughts before and after appreciation of the light sculptures. To meet the conditions, one of the sharp corner areas in the middle of the canal route was chosen. Here, visitors will experience dramatic scenery with various feelings and thoughts.

THEME

ABSTRACT SCULPTURE WITH VARIOUS BODY GESTURES AND DEEP FEELINGS

To deliver the various body gestures and feelings universally as well as differently to visitors, abstract sculpture was proposed rather than specific shapes. And, the abstract sculpture should contain deep anguish feelings and body gestures. Moreover, in association with light, the effect will allow visitors get emotional and epic experiences by projecting themselves into the sculptures. Plus, in virtue of the location, visitors also appreciate various appearances by different angles.

TECHNICAL PRINCIPLE

Basically, the main complicated structure is made of prefabricated and welded stainless steel frames. Along the horizontal frames, LED strip lights are installed to get the light effect. And, perforated and see-through fabric skin is wrapped around the frames. Finally, the 6 legs are stretched to the bottom of the canal to support the whole structures. For storm proof, the fabric perforated skin will reduce air resistance and the six legs strong enough to support the whole bodies. For winter proof, the fabric skin and stainless steel is not affected by the cold temperature and humidity. Even, snow and frost can be a part of the sculpture with unexpected expressions.
